T1 Shopper's Technology

Like many technology companies, we've invested heavily in our hardware and take some amount of pride in it.  This hardware was put together to make your experience at T1 Shopper the fastest it can possibly be.

T1 Shopper's primary server is custom built using:

  • A SuperMicro H8DCi motherboard which is entirely 64-bit.
  • Two 64-bit dual core AMD Opteron processors (OSA290FAA6CB) each with a 1000MHz system bus operating at a frequency of 2800MHz and 2 MB of Level 2 cache.
  • Sixteen or more gigabytes of registered, DDR PC-3200 memory is used. We're using Crucial server memory (CT2KIT25672Y40B) which is specifically designed for rock-solid stability in demanding server applications.
  • RAID 10 array for the exceptional database read performance it offers. RAID 10 provides mirrored sets of drives in a striped set (minimum 4 disks; even number of disks) which provides fault tolerance and improved performance but increases complexity. The array can sustain multiple drive losses as long as no two drives lost comprise a single pair of one mirror. The RAID 10 array is controlled by a dedicated 3WARE 9550SX controller card providing SATA II performance at 3.0 Gbps transfer rate with Native Command Queuing (NCQ).
  • Western Digital VelociRaptor disks are used (WD3000HLFS). Each disk has 300 GB capacity, SATA 3 Gb/s transfer rate, 16 MB memory cache and rotates at 10,000 RPM. These drives have one of the fastest read seek time of 4.6 ms and 2.99 ms (nominal) average latency. These SATA drives outperform many other drives including many SCSI drives as shown in several benchmarks including the review at the link here.  We've had two of these WD drives fail in the last 3 years. YMMV. When we get a new setup, we'll get 2.5 inch SAS drives as they are even faster.
  • Overlaid on this hardware is the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 64-bit operating system.  We use 64-bit applications whenever they are available including our MySQL database which is using a 64-bit distribution.
  • The server is located the U.S. Colo facility located on the 18th floor of one of the nation's preeminent collocation buildings, One Wilshire in downtown Los Angeles, California which is one of the world's most interconnected facilities. Hundreds of networks converge at the corner of Wilshire and Grand in downtown Los Angeles, bringing together networks from nations around the globe. Over the past decade, the 656,000 square-foot building has emerged as the premier communications hub of the Pacific Rim.
  • All switching and network interface devices from the server all the way to the network edge/IP handoff are gigabit/1000Mbps rated.
